The state’s five biggest live poker tournament winners have combined winnings of $17,677,801 plus a handful of WSOP bracelets. How many of these Alabama residents have you heard of before?

Shannon Shorr Is The Biggest Winner in Alabama

Shannon Shorr hails from Tuscaloose, Alabama and it one of the game’s stars. Shorr is 35-years-old and has secured results for almost two decades.

Shorr cut his teeth in the online poker world where he excelled at No-Limit Hold’em tournaments. He’s removed his details from PocketFives, an online tracking site, but we know Shorr has several million dollars in winnings.

His $8,086,240 in live MTT winnings places him first in Alabama and 71st in the United States. Much of Shorr’s success came before he was 21-years-old, meaning he travelled the world playing in the biggest events.

Shorr’s first recorded live cash weighed in at A$271,700 ($199,129). This was Shorr’s reward for a fourth-place finish in the 2006 Aussie Millions Main Event. He’s racked up 22 six-figure prizes since.

A $1 million prize eludes Shorr, although he came close in 2006 at the Bellagio Cup II. Shorr won it and took home $960,690. A WSOP bracelet also eludes Shorr, which means he’s one of the best players without a bracelet. That will change one day, surely?

Two-Time WSOP Champion Hoyt Corkins Calls Alabama Home

Hoyt Corkins is known for his softly-spoken voice and highly aggressive style of play. The loose-aggressive star calls Glenwood, Alabama home and it’s here he returned with $6,072,620 in winnings.

Sixty-year-old Corkins has cashes dating back to 1989 and all but six of them came from events in the US. He won the first of his two WSOP bracelets in 1992. Corkins took down the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event for $96,000. he had a 25-year wait for his second bracelet, which came in a $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Max event. That netted Corkins $515,065.

Corkins bagged a $1,089,200 prize in 2003 when he triumphed in the $10,200 World Poker Finals.

He doesn’t play as much poker as he once did, but he’s still a feared competitor when he shows up.

The Talented Sandeep Pulusani

Huntsville, Alabama is the home of the talented Sandeep Pulusani who has accumulated $1,413,467 in winnings. Pulusani won the bulk of that impressive sum in 2013 and 2019.

Pulusani became a WSOP bracelet winner in 2013. He came out on top in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em event and banked $592,684. His victory denied Scotland’s Niall Farrell his first bracelet.

He enjoyed another big score in 2019, one worth $354,400, his reward for victory in the $5,200 Bay 101 Shooting Star event. There’s no doubt Pulusani is itching to get back into the world of live poker once COVID-19 restriction lift.

McBrayer’s 164 live cashes have earned him $1,131,311; 25 of those cashes are for five-figures. He’s come super close to reeling in a six-figure score on two occasions. The first came in 2008 when he scooped $96,701. The second came in 2011 when he won $98,874, McBrayer’s largest score to-date.

Steven McKoy Is Closing in on $1 Million in Earnings

Steven McKoy is only $16,000 away from breaking through the $1 million barrier. The man from Birmingham, Alabama, however, hasn’t cashed since April 2018. McKoy took two years off after bursting onto the scene in 2009. This could be another brief hiatus.

We hope he does return and surpass $1 million in winnings. Someone who has cashed 21-times for five-figures scores and has a six-figure prize to their name is an obvious poker talent. That largest prize weighs in at $110,000, a reward for a fifth-place finish in a $3,500 event in 2014.
